Team profile

Bulgaria

The Bulgarian team made their FIVB World Championship
debut in the inaugural edition of 1952, finishing fourth (amongst eight
participants), which remains their best placing to date. In their 12th
appearance in the competition last year, Bulgaria ranked 12th at the World
Championship.

Bulgaria's biggest success on the world stage was at
the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games, when they won the bronze medal after beating
Hungary 3-2 in the third-place playoff. A year later, Bulgaria claimed gold at
the 1981 European Championship as hosts of the event, when they topped the
round-robin competition with a critical 3-0 win over the Soviet Union in the
deciding match. As well as this success, Bulgaria also have two European
Championship bronze medals, from 1979 and 2001.

Bulgaria first joined the FIVB World Grand Prix in
2013, finishing ninth in their debut season which remains their best ranking in
the competition.
Bulgaria are making their Volleyball Nations League
debut this year, after topping the inaugural Volleyball Challenger Cup in 2019.
Bulgaria replaced  Argentina who were relegated from the VNL last
year. In the 2019 edition Bulgaria lost its place in the VNL and was relegated from VNL for 2020.

Petkov Ivan

Ivan Petkov took charge of Bulgaria's Women's National Team last year, making his international breakthrough as assistant coach of the successful Bulgarian squad, which made the Final Four of the 2009 FIVB Women's Junior Volleyball World Championship in Mexico. In 2015, the former player of Lokomotiv Plovdiv head coached the young 'Lionesses' to eighth place at the FIVB U20 World Championship in Puerto Rico. At a club level, Petkov has been head coach of the women's team of Maritza Plovdiv since 2004, gradually bringing the side to the most successful period in their history and making Maritza an absolute dominant force on the domestic scene. Since taking over the Women's National Team, the 42-year-old has led the side to gold medal in the 2018 Golden European League and first place in the 2018 FIVB Challenger Cup in Lima, which eraned Bulgaria a spot in the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
