Argentina

 ARGENTINA

On the debut
season under Coach Marcelo Mendez orders, the Argentina men´s national team
will play its second VNL as core nation. It will be an important year for the
South Americans, that will seek the qualification to Tokio 2020, but will also
compete at the FIVB World Cup in Japan and the Pan American Games in Lima,
Peru.


In 2016, the
Argentines showed its quality, finishing fifth at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
They also won bronze at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, their highest placing in
seven appearances at the Games.


Argentina’s
first World Championship appearance came in 1960 when the team finished 11th in
Rio, and last year was the nation’s 12th appearance at the event. Argentina’s
highest-ranked finish in the competition was in 1982 when, as hosts they won a
bronze medal following a 3-0 win over Japan.


Fourth remains
Argentina’s highest finish in the FIVB World League, when they lost to hosts
Poland in the 2011 bronze medal match. They have also ranked fifth on two
occasions, in 2009 and 2010. 


Argentina
ranked 14th in the inaugural FIVB Volleyball Nations League in 2018, with stand
out victories over Italy, Australia and Brazil. In this 2019 the team will try
to improve its performance and will once again host a weekend of the
preliminary round, this time in Mendoza, after the successful experience in San
Juan.

 MENDEZ, MARCELO (COACH)

The 54 years
old former player will debut as Head Coach of Argentina after several years in
the spotlight of international volleyball thanks to his success with Sada
Cruzeiro in Brazil. He started his career as coach in River Plate, becoming
champion with the team before leaving to Spain to lead Palma Volley. That experience
pushed him to the Spanish National Team to then arrive at Brazil, firstly to
Montes Claros and then to Sada Cruzeiro in 2009. He completed his tenth season
this year at the team, winning over 30 titles including three Club World
Championship gold medals, six South American Championships and six Superleague
crowns. His time as Argentine Head Coach has come and he will make his official
debut at the VNL.
